St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 5 students showed their creative sides while learning about well-known social justice advocates during a Religious Education project recently.
The project required students to make their own people scape that outlined how and why a particular person was a good example of social justice. A people scape is a collage of images, quotes and paragraphs of information about a particular person.
“Nudgee College prides itself on being advocates of social justice and throughout their time at the College students will have the opportunity to be an advocate for promoting just ways of acting,” said teacher Ms Maria Egan.
“This task allowed students to investigate how individuals use the Christian traditions in social justice advocacy.”
Options available for students to select were Mother Teresa, Dorothy Day, St Francis of Assisi, Fred Hollows, Miriam Rose, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr, and Bono.
Each people scape outlined the life story of the person and how they were socially just in their lives. Students then had to choose one of the Catholic Social Justice Teachings and one scripture quote on social justice and explain how their person demonstrated/s this.
The final component of the people scape was for the students to reflect on how they can live the vision of their person.
“The boys enjoyed the note taking, finding out about what their person did, using Catholic teachings to help understand their person and their motivation,” Ms Egan said.
Students Dylan Sutherland and Jacob Ghanimeh seconded Ms Egan’s thoughts.
“This was a really cool project. It was fun learning about different people who we hadn’t heard of before and the things they had done in their lives,” they said.
