St Joseph’s Nudgee College students became Myth Busters recently when they designed and presented experiments at the Year 7 Science Fair.

The experiments displayed at the Fair were the student’s assessment pieces from their Term 1 Science studies.

“The assessment was based on the TV show Myth Busters which looks at how things work,” said teacher Mr Logan Hawkins.

“Working in groups the students had to either prove or disprove something. They could either look at one concept or claim to find out if it was true or compare one claim against another.”

In addition to their group experiments, Mr Hawkins’ Year 7 class undertook a special experiment as a class group with the final results revealed at the Science Fair.

“The 7H class performed a Coke v teeth experiment where we took three teeth of similar size and put them in three different types of liquid – Coke, Powerade and juice – for two weeks,” Mr Hawkins said.

“We were testing two things. The first was discolouration and the second was erosion. The results showed Coke was the worst for both discoloration and erosion at the end of the experiment.”

There were a number of different experiments performed and displayed at the Fair including a bounciest tennis ball test, most absorbent paper towel, strongest sock, most comfortable pillow and a water taste test.
