Developing golf skills
May 17, 2011
Possible golf professionals of the future took to the putting green last week for the launch of the My Golf program at the Nudgee College Golf Club.
Students and parents from Years 5-7 attended the launch which included an information session for parents, putting practice for the students and a BBQ.
“All Year 5 students will begin the My Golf program during PE classes in Term 3,” said Nudgee College Golf Club Professional Mr Craig Goodall.
“The My Golf program not only gets students interested in golf at a young age but also teaches them hand-eye coordination and helps develop motor skills,” he said.
My Golf is a national skills challenge and awards program run by Golf Queensland and endorsed by Golf Australia and the Australian Sports Commission.
The My Golf framework is targeted to boys and girls aged 8–16 years to develop and assess their skills in the six key skills of the game: Rip It (long shots); Roll It (putting); Chip It (chipping); Fly It (pitching); Blast It (bunker shots); and Bend It (manoeuvring the ball). These skills are tested across five graded levels in each of three main award categories called bronze, silver and gold.
Nudgee College Year 5 students will begin at the entry level and can progress as far as a tour professional. The program also provides successful participants with a handicap which is a nationwide recognition that allows them to play in competitions anywhere and can have benefits in the Senior curriculum.
“Years 11 and 12 HPE students study golf as part of the curriculum,” said Mr Goodall.
“If students already have golfing experience, their skills will be better which will translate into better results. It will also mean a stronger school team,” he said.
As it is forming part of their curriculum, Year 5 students will all be registered for the My Golf program however, the program is available to anyone. For further information and pricing please contact the Nudgee College Golf Club on (07) 3865 0595 or email golfclub@nudgee.com.
The Nudgee College Golf Club offers a nine-hole course with a Par 70 layout and full Australian Golf Union affiliation. The Golf Club and attached pro-shop are open to the general public. Opening times can be found on the Golf Club website.
Building works on the Nudgee College campus have resulted in the nine-hole course currently undergoing redevelopment with construction of three new holes improving the existing layout. People interested in learning more about the course or the Nudgee College Golf Club in general should visit on the next Family Open Day on Sunday May 22.
