Included among the hundreds of pieces of artwork that lined the second Gateway Bridge during the Community Day last Sunday were pieces from St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 5-7 students.
Head of Visual Arts Mr Gregg Elliot reports on the students involvement in the Community Day and the experience gained through working with local artist Elih Brading.
Last term the Nudgee College Visual Art Department nominated to be involved in the second Gateway Bridge Community Day Celebrations.
In addition to giving people a chance to walk over the new bridge, the aim of the day was to provide an opportunity for Queensland's young, local and emerging artists to provide music and culture and display artworks from local school children. The day was an excellent opportunity for the College’s Visual Art students to be involved in and celebrate our local community.
Nudgee College was successful in its application and the Year 5-7 art workshop boys were willing participants and enthusiastically jumped at the opportunity. Supported by Miss Poppie Kenneally, the students all designed their interpretation of what it means to them to be part of our local community and celebrate what is special in this area.
The students were supported in this activity by local artist Elih Brading. He inspired and guided the students in designing and painting the community disks. The students were fortunate to participate in such an activity, the benefits of which were evident from the excitement in the room while they constructed their artworks.
The works were displayed along with other local schools and groups on the Community Day on Sunday 16th May.
The weekend was even more exciting for several Year 5-7 students who appeared on the Weekend Today show with Year 7 student Josh Voysey being interviewed during a live cross to the bridge.
