St Joseph’s Nudgee College Year 11 Health Education students learnt how to “suck the guts out of life” this week when clowns Peebo and Dagwood visited the College.

Head of Health Education Ms Suzie Tjin reports on the visit.

This week the Year 11 Health Education cohort were privileged enough to attend a presentation by Peebo and Dagwood – nationally recognised clowns; clowns with a difference; clowns with cystic fibrosis.

The twin brothers, who were diagnosed at birth, were not expected to live more than 24 hours; however 37 years on they have defied all odds.

As a part of the Chronic Illness and Disability unit within the Health Education curriculum, Peebo and Dagwood (also known as Peter and David Bisell) inspired the boys by speaking to them about their struggles with cystic fibrosis, their brushes with death, the loss of their sister to the same illness and the blessings each of them have received in the form of double lung transplantations. Their ability to always look at the positives is evident in their motto “suck the guts out of life” and is certainly relayed through their magical performances.

To top off such an inspirational speech, Peebo and Dagwood wowed the audience by performing some of their magic tricks for the students and were kind enough to give away some of the secrets of the trade. The Year 11 Health Education cohort left the performance armed with inspiration, positive attitudes, smiles on faces, card tricks on the mind, and balloon poodles in hand.

A magical experience – and one the boys will certainly not forget!
