Academic success has been cause for congratulations at St Joseph's Nudgee College in the past few weeks as the College celebrates the achievements of students at the weekly assemblies.

Over the past three assemblies, 112 Bronze, 164 Silver and 129 Gold Academic Medals have been awarded to students in Years 5-12 based on their academic results in Semester 1, 2009.

Nudgee College Principal Mr Daryl Hanly congratulated all Academic Medal winners and said he was particularly pleased to see the large number of students who excelled in the classroom as well as on the sporting field.

"Having presented these awards, there is no doubt in my mind that a significant number of our young sportsmen are also exceptional achievers academically," Mr Hanly said.

"On reflection, this is part of the quintessence of what Nudgee College has to offer - the capacity for the achievement of excellent academic outcomes, outstanding experience at the highest level in a range of sporting competitions, as well as formation into what we call our 'signs of faith'."

Year 12 student Sam Vollert was awarded his ninth Gold Medal. Sam has been awarded a Gold Medal every semester throughout his time at Nudgee College.

"Sam's achievement in being awarded a Gold Medal every semester for 4 and a half years is a wonderful example of a student who has found a balance between his studies and extra-curricular activities," said Dean of Learning and Teaching Mr Sean Riordan.

"In addition to his academic achievements, Sam is a House Prefect and is also a member of the College's First XI, Senior A Debating, Cross Country and Track and Field teams."

A special guest at the Year 8 and 9 awards assembly was 2008 Old Boy Lachlan Stokes. Lachlan was recently awarded an Australian Vocational Student Prize for 2008.

The Australian Vocational Student Prize, awarded to only 300 students nationwide, recognises outstanding skills, commitment and achievement in the vocational education and training a student undertakes as part of their senior secondary certificate studies.

During his Senior years at Nudgee College, Lachlan successfully achieved certificates in Construction, Engineering and Hospitality and was named Dux of Year 12 Hospitality Operations last year. He now works as a shopfitting apprentice at Interfit Retail.
